The Sample Development Process
Sample development is the bridge between your design concept and mass production. In the footwear industry, this phase typically takes 2-6 weeks and involves multiple iterations.
Stage 1: Tech Pack Creation
A complete technical package (tech pack) is the foundation of successful sample development. Your tech pack should include:
- Technical drawings with measurements (length, width, heel height, ankle height)
- Material specifications including leather grades, sole materials, lining types
- Construction details - Goodyear welt, cemented, vulcanized, etc.
- Hardware specifications - buckles, zippers, eyelets with brand/color codes
- Reference samples - physical examples of similar styles you like
Stage 2: Material Selection
Material selection happens concurrently with tech pack refinement. Chinese manufacturers typically source from established material markets:
| Material Type | Primary Source | Price Range | Lead Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full-grain leather | Wenzhou, Guangzhou | $8-15/sq.ft | 7-14 days |
| PU synthetic | Wenzhou | $3-6/sq.ft | 5-10 days |
| Rubber soles | Dongguan, Wenzhou | $2-5/pair | 10-20 days |
| EVA midsoles | Dongguan | $1.5-3/pair | 7-14 days |
Stage 3: Sample Iterations
Most shoe products require 2-4 sample iterations before final approval. Here is a typical timeline:
Common Sample Development Issues
Issue: Color Deviation
Solution: Always provide physical Pantone color standards, not just digital codes. Request color samples before bulk order.
Issue: Material Substitution
Solution: Specify exact material codes and request material samples with your tech pack.
Issue: Size/Fit Discrepancy
Solution: Provide your own foot measurements and request sample fittings on multiple size ranges.
